Using the lightest weight 75g/m2 PrimaLoft® ACTIVE insulating fabric, the Core Boxers is a highly insulating first layer, perfect for harsh conditions and cold overnights.
The PrimaLoft® ACTIVE fabric has great air permeability, allowing for a comfortable and stable climate to be maintained, even during high output. The woven plume is incredibly warm for its weight and with minimal bulk, whilst the PointZero fly cover acts as a wind and moisture barrier; the Core Boxers are well suited to extreme conditions.

Plus, who doesn’t love fluffy pants?

PrimaLoft® ACTIVE blurs the line between wadding insulation and fabric; PrimaLoft® ACTIVE loosely weaves PrimaLoft®’s industry-leading insulating fibres through a fine polyester mesh. The resultant structure is warmer and less than half the weight of a conventional fleece product – Down like performance when dry whilst also still performing when wet.

ADAPTIVE INSULATION

PrimaLoft® ACTIVE Insulating Fabric weaves PrimaLoft® fibres onto a mesh giving a very high volume but open loft. Fabrics insulate by trapping pockets of air that the wearer s heat cannot pass through. Core structure is exceptional at creating these pockets. However the openness also allows for a light breeze to disturb these air pockets and remove the insulation effect.

HALF THE WEIGHT PACK SIZE

A single mesh fabric holds the insulation plume in place, halving the weight and pack size of a traditional insulating layer.

FINEST QUALITY SYNTHETIC INSULATION

At OMM we always choose synthetic insulation over down to be sure that we can get warm even when everything is wet and PrimaLoft® make the best synthetic insulation. PrimaLoft® ACTIVE Insulating Fabric Technology uses 58% post-consumer recycled material and is Bluesign and Oeke-Tex approved.

Is a First Layer the same as a Baselayer?

Yes & no. We don’t use the word baselayer as this is more accurately used to describe tighter fitting ‘skins’ or compression garments. Our First Layer pieces are designed to be the start of your layering but you may decide to wear a tighter ‘baselayer’ underneath. Our First Layers work best next to the skin and use fabrics designed to wick sweat and dry quickly whilst feeling soft against the skin and minimising rub points.

What's the fit like?

As discussed above, our First Layers are different to Baselayers in that we do not make them skin tight. Most of our First Layers use our Contact Fit (you can find an exact Size Guide on each product page, plus a guide to our Fit), the fabrics work best close to the skin but do not need to be ‘sprayed on’.

Can I wear these under a pack of vest?

Yes! All our products are designed to be used in conjunction with packs and vests, though of course the lighter weight products may not last as long as a heavier weight equivalent. We have moved seams  away from areas likely to rub such as the shoulders and use flatlock stitches to reduce bulk and friction. Bobbling of the fabric is a normal part of wear and tear and will not effect

How can I stop my First Layer smelling?

Wash it! You can find a full Product Care Guide here and at the bottom of the page. A number of our First Layers use Polygeine which is a long lasting treatment to the fibres that inhibits bacterial action. You can also use specific wash products designed for use on sports gear, that kills off bacteria without damaging or astringent detergents and high heats.

Shorts or Leggings?

Some runners will only wear a full length legging when there is a foot of snow on the ground and a howling gale. Some will even hold out then, opting instead for chapped legs and snow-burnt shins! What to wear whilst running is very personal choice but OMM offers a range of Legwear to cover (get it!) a wide range of options. For fast and light racing, check out the Speed Short, a classic split short made for going fast. Or for those in-between days go for the Flash 0.75, a 3/4 length tight that will see most through winter. When snow is on the ground it is a good idea to protect your shins, the Flash 1.0 will do just that. For multi-day adventures or wearing over a legging, the versatility of the PaceLite Short is a good option too.

What about waterproofs?

You will find our waterproof Legwear both here and over on the Outer Layer Page. So if you’re looking for a full waterproof outfit to satisfy kit list needs, head over there. If you’re just looking for stuff that covers your pins, you’ll find it here.

Leg length and fit

You can find our Size Guide via the link on each product page, this includes measurement ranges for each size. You can also find our Fit Guide there too. Our performances fabrics usually work best close to the skin and we make our Legwear in a relatively close fit to reduces drag and bulk whilst moving quickly in the mountains. Our leg lengths also reflect this; often shorter than traditional hiking or streetwear, this is to keep fabric out of the way of running feet. In the case of waterproofs, it is less essential to create a seal with your footwear, as with hiking overtrousers,  since you’re likely to be plunging into rivers and bogs and most running footwear isn’t waterproof. Some of our Legwear is a Unisex Fit, in which case it is often best to go down a size for Women.

Do we use Lycra?

Yes, a bit. We use Lycra in our Flash range of tights but not much. We could make them super stretchy, just like those fashionable high street leggings but we don’t for a reason. Lycra is super stretchy, which is great, but other than that it doesn’t have many other properties that a mountain runner might look for in a piece of Legwear. It is not very thermally insulating, very quick drying or wicking and can lead to quite a cool feeling against the skin; not what you want on a rain-soaked summit. So we keep the Lycra content to minimum and instead use clever panelling of the fabrics, orientating them to optimise the direction of stretch throughout the running motion; clever stuff!
