Have a go at navigation with our free trails! Can you navigate around the mini maze or a mini course within the Grasmere Showfield or tackle a longer trail around the beautiful Grasmere village. Learn navigation skills which are not only a vital life skill but a handy performance tool for budding trail and fell runners. Understand how to orientate a map, look for features and plan for the optimum route between controls, not to mention a few compass tricks too. Delivered by the friendly team from British Orienteering.

“A Year Like No Other” Grasmere & Beyond
Steve Watts MBE
Inspired by Lakeland Fell Running Legend Joss Naylor some 40 odd years ago – to Stop thee Smoking & get on’t Fells Lad, Steve (a Grasmere local) became a prolific fell runner and has gone on to raise over 3 Million Pounds for various Children’s Charities through his running exploits (see bio below).
He’ll be talking us through some of these adventures and showing us some of his amazing photographs from his book ‘a year like no other’ that helped so many through the pandemic.
Steve’s main objective is to inspire the next generation of ‘Lakeland Lovers’ & potential OMM participants. See Steve’s Bio below.

About our 2024 Speakers
Steve Watts MBE
Inspired by Lakeland Fell Running Legend Joss Naylor some 40 odd years ago – whose advice to Steve was you need to Stop thee Smoking – Lose some weight – & get on’t Fells Lad – the rest as they say is history.
With Joss’s words of advice ringing in his ears Steve in 1984 completed the Bob Graham Round of 42 Lakeland Peaks in 24 Hrs – becoming BGR Member 311.
Since then Steve as gone on to raise over 3 Million Pounds for various Children’s Charities through his running exploits:
Kilimanjaro for Kids
In 2016 Steve became the first person in the World to run the Everest Marathon with a Pacemaker – for his heart
Ran from Lands End to John o’ Grouts – Steve as recently visited Windsor Castle where he served as a Grenadier Guard for his MBE Investiture awarded by King Charles.
Steve’s main objective is to try & inspire the next generation of ‘Lakeland Lovers’ & potential OMM participants.
Dave Troman – Love to Run Coaching
Dave is a qualified running coach through UK Athletics and the prestigious UESCA college in the US. He is also a running technique coach with The Running School, based in London. He has a degree in sports science and a background in teaching sports psychology.
Love to Run Coaching was established in 2017 and has quickly become a respected name within the sport for athletes of all abilities. Dave was a Great Britain international orienteer at junior and senior level and has subsequently raced on the roads, cross country, trails and fells.
Amongst his achievements have been podium finishes in some of the UK’s toughest ultra marathons and mountain marathons.
Sean Bolland
Sean has over 30 years mountain running experience. Growing up, Sean was involved in British Orienteering which helped develop his navigation skills.
As an accomplished fell runner, Sean has placed well in British and English Fell Championships and is a previous OMM Elite class winner.
Sean is a running guide who also delivers navigation coaching to runners and hikers alike.
Marcus Scotney
Marcus has over 30 years of running experience, GB runner, qualified Sports Therapist, studied Sport Science to HND level and holds several coaching qualifications. More info here
Nicola Merrett
NIcky is a Mountain Leader, navigation and poles coach. She founded Hiking Highs in 2015 to deliver guided walking breaks and inspire folk to get out in the hills. Nicky lives at the foot of Helvellyn – the Helvellyn Massif is her playgound all year round. Teaching the magic of using poles in the fells alongside confidence boosting navigation training is Nicky’s passion.
Darren Foote
Darren founded Mountain Fuel after having served 13 yrs in the Royal Military Police as a physical training instructor. He completed a diploma in sports nutrition and worked alongside a sports sientis to creat the original drinks formulas.
He’s also a lecturerer in public servies, health and social care along with sports nutrition. He enjoys coaching and is L3 PT L2 UK athletics coach and also enjoys time as a Wellbeing coah while charity fund raising and supporting mental health in communitites and veteran charities.
